The Sierra Club is one of the few environmental organizations that can actively lobby for the environment and endorse pro-environmental candidates at elections. The Utah Chapter is active in both areas. Our political committee works to identify the strongest candidates for office by looking at voting records, holding interviews and distributing questionnaires. Then we publicize our endorsements to our members through a variety of channels. We also encourage our members and other volunteers to support endorsed candidates through phone banking, walking their precincts and attending campaign events. Most of our work is concentrated on the Utah state legislature, but we do endorse some county and municipal candidates, as well. We also occasionally endorse candidates for the US House and Senate.

The chapter's legislative committee is actively involved with promoting pro-environmental bills. We also work to stop the bills that would weaken health standards and public lands protection. When the legislature is not in session we work with legislators to develop pro-environmental bills. As the legislative session gets under way in January or early February we usually hold a training session for club members and the general public to learn how the legislature works and how to support our agenda. We maintain an online bill tracker and distribute regular alerts to legislators as well as the general public during the session. After the session concludes we publish scorecards to show how each Utah representative and senator voted on critical environmental bills. Check to see if your legislators were heros or zeros and read about each session's highs and lows.
