GLOBAL WARMINGJust over 50 percent of our electricity in the U.S. comes from burning coal, which is a major contributor of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In Utah, our coal habit provides 95 percent of our electricity. Yet coal power proponents want to build more coal-burning power plants, two of which are currently permitted by the Utah Division of Air Quality although the plants have not started construction. These two facilities will emit an extra 10 million tons of CO2 per year. Utah can do better. The Sierra Club believes that we should address our growing energy needs first through energy efficiency and conservation and also developing renewable energy sources. Such measures will go far in addressing the state's contribution to global warming while diversifying our energy economy and hedging consumers against the volatility in fossil fuel prices. This is why we started the Utah Global Warming Initiative, which is simply a specific campaign urging Governor Jon Huntsman to issue a resolution that sets greenhouse gas reduction targets for the state. Please consider signing our petition supporting this resolution. Up to Top |
