Transportation:
Urban Trails Appropriation

Our Position: support
Bill Number: hb104s3
Sponsor: Rep. Kory M. Holdaway (R-Taylorsville)
Legislative Session: 2008 General Session

This legislation provides a one-time appropriation to plan and build urban trails.

Status

Between the first and third substitute of this bill, the appropriation was changed from a continuing appropriation of $250,000 to a one-time appropriation of $500,000.  That funding is divided between $250,000 for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and a fund to pay for planning other urban trails. This measure is still very much worth supporting.

The bill passed the house on February 6th on a vote of 38-29-8.  That's a disappointingly narrow margin.  Quite a few representatives from urban districts whose constituents currently benefit or could benefit in the future from urban trails voted against the bill.  Check out the heros and zeros in this vote tally.  If your representative voted in favor, please take a moment to thank her/him.

HB104S3 passed the senate 3 March on a 22-4-3 vote.

Background

Trails such as the Provo River Trail, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and the Parley's Creek Trail provide not only recreation but also short to medium-distance commuting options.  This appropriation will help make Utah more liveable and more efficient.  Find out more about the Parley's Creek Corridor Trail.
