Snowbasin Panorama

This photo, taken from the Green Pond area, shows the peaks and ridges of Snowbasin Ski Area as well as a few of the ski runs and a small portion of the land traded to resort owner Earl Holding.

The Olympic ski runs are at the far right (north), and occupy only a small fraction of the ski area. Strawberry Bowl, once part of a National Forest roadless area, is at the far left (south). The pre-1997 ski area (recently outfitted with snowmaking equipment, a mountaintop restaurant, and a new gondola lift) occupies most of the land in between. Notice that the Mt. Ogden communication towers don't show up at all in this wide-angle photo, thanks to ideal lighting conditions and enough time for the ice to melt off them since the last storm.

The foreground of the photo shows a very small portion of the land traded from the Forest Service to Snowbasin. Although this photo was taken on February 3, 2002, only five days before the start of the Olympics, this land remains untouched by Olympic-related developments--as does more than 90% of the rest of the traded land. But come back in ten years, and you'll probably see condos or vacation homes at this site.
