Cool Keeper Frequently asked questions

What is a Cool Keeper switch?

The Cool Keeper switch is an intelligent device that is mounted near your outdoor central air conditioning unit. This device allows Utah Power to efficiently cycle your air conditioning unit for a few minutes each half-hour during selected weekday summer afternoons to help manage the demand for electricity.

How does Cool Keeper work?

When you enroll in the Cool Keeper Program, an intelligent switch is installed next to your exterior central air conditioning (A/C) unit. On selected weekdays during the summer, June through August, Utah Power can automatically coordinate the cycling of participating air conditioners in order to balance the supply and demand for electricity. When Cool Keeper is activated, your outside central Air conditioning unit will run for a few minutes less each half-hour, but your cool air will continue to circulate so you stay comfortable.

How often will the Cool Keeper device be activated?

Utah Power typically cycles your air conditioner for only a few minutes per half-hour from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on selected summer weekdays, and never on holidays or weekends.

Will Cool Keeper affect my comfort level when activated?

84% of customers report they don’t even notice when their outside air conditioner has been cycled. Those that do, notice a temperature change of 1 to 3 degrees.

Who is eligible to participate in Cool Keeper?

Cool Keeper is available to those Utah Power residential and small business customers located along the Wasatch Front and Tooele County that have central air conditioning.

How does Cool Keeper benefit me?

By balancing the demand for electricity along the Wasatch Front, Utah Power is strengthening the reliability of our existing infrastructure. This means less occurrences of power loss and less inconvenience for you. Plus, by balancing the demand for electricity, the need to produce or purchase expensive peak power is decreased, which helps to keep everyone’s costs down.

In addition, as a thank you, residential customers receive $20 and business customers receive a $40 credit on their fall Utah Power bill for every year they participate in the program.

When will I receive my credit for participating?

Customers who participate will receive an annual thank you credit on their Utah Power bill each fall. A partial credit is applied for participation after the start of the cooling season (June 1).

How long after I sign up before the switch is installed?

After you sign up, it takes between two and three weeks for a certified technician to install. During certain times of the year, large numbers of customers signing up for the program may delay installation.

Do I need to be home when my device is installed?

No, your convenience is important to us and you do not need to be home when the device is installed near your outside air conditioning unit.

Are there any “catches” to enrolling?

There are no “catches” to joining the more than 40,000 of your friends and neighbors who have enrolled in the program. There is also no charge if you wish to cancel.
