Salt Lake City - The Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club today enthusiastically
endorsed the passage of Salt Lake County's Proposition #3. The new sales tax
increase will provide critical funding necessary for the rapid expansion of
new mass transit in Salt Lake County. The Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club
has long been a strong advocate for promoting mass transit alternatives as
good for the environment.

"Proposition 3 is critically needed to speed up the construction of TRAX and
commuter rail lines to help improve air quality, protect open space, and
relieve traffic congestion problems," said Scott Daniels, Political Chair of
Sierra Club's Utah Chapter.

The Sierra Club is pleased that Salt Lake County Council of Governments
(COG), consisting of mayors in the county and the Salt Lake County Council,
is responsible for determining the priority of transportation projects to
receive funding. The members of the Salt Lake COG have been strong, vocal
supporters for immediate expansion of TRAX light rail. The Sierra Club is
disappointed with the Utah State Legislature's attempts to interfere by
delaying the COG's priority list but remains assured that the local mayors
will stand firm in their commitment to funding new transit projects.

"The people have spoken loudly for new transit and our local mayors will
make the final decision," said Marc Heileson, Sierra Club's Southwest
Representative. "The best way for voters to protest the legislature's delay
tactics is to overwhelmingly pass Proposition 3 and send a clear message to
the Salt Lake County leaders that they have a mandate to expand TRAX and
commuter rail," Heileson added.

The Sierra Club will actively reach out to its Salt Lake County members and
strongly urge them to vote YES on Proposition #3 on November 7th.
